Home School Info Tent @ Off Grid Festival in Chiltern

The decision to go off-grid or live more sustainably might be for personal freedom, fun and adventure, a desire to live closer to nature, reduce bills, or it might come from a deeper feeling of guilt about your impacts on the earth. For us, it’s all of these things and more, and when we focus on the specific areas we can improve - taking one step at a time, it's easy to feel the progress and be proud.

Since the beginning of this festival, the local Albury/Wodonga & Surrounds Home School Community has been given a site to offer FREE information on home Education, Life schooling and Alternative Education for our children.

Many families are not aware that Home education is legal and sustainable here in Australia.

This information tent is supported by home schooling families who are available to share their personal experiences and give some guidance on how to register in both NSW and Vic.

Volunteers offer a few hours of their time during the festival in exchange for access to the festival. Some even camp for the weekend!

If you are interested in Volunteering, please email Annmarie for more information.

Our mission is information.

Home education is a valid and legal option for families across Australia, providing a flexible and sustainable approach to learning that aligns with diverse lifestyles, including off-grid and eco-conscious living. Many families choosing this path find it allows their children to develop real-world skills—gardening, conservation, and self-sufficiency—while still meeting curriculum requirements. Home education doesn’t mean closing the door on mainstream schooling; families can return to traditional schools at any time if their needs change. Additionally, students who don’t pursue an ATAR can still access higher education through alternative pathways such as portfolios, TAFE, and university bridging programs. By integrating education into daily life, home-educating families nurture independent, resourceful learners who are well-equipped for both academic success and a sustainable future.

Our vision

We envision a future where home education is recognized as a valid, legal, and flexible pathway for Australian families seeking a sustainable and personalized approach to learning. Our commitment is to empower families to nurture independent, resourceful learners who thrive through real-world experiences—whether in conservation, self-sufficiency, or innovative thinking—while still meeting curriculum requirements. We celebrate the freedom to transition between home and mainstream schooling as needed and champion diverse pathways to higher education beyond the ATAR. By embracing education as a lifelong, adaptable journey, we support families in fostering resilient, knowledgeable individuals prepared for both academic achievement and a sustainable future.
